"We are certain that militants have more than once attempted such provocations. Therefore, the direct sponsors of opposition forces, who offer them support, must also see to it that they give up on further provocations," the minister said.

13-09-30 Snowden Among Nominees for a European Human Rights Prize

And then again, there is the nomination of Manning (whatever first name) for the Nobel Peace Prize.  So in contrast with the interpretation of the writer below (resentment in Europe and beyond against the United States), this year's crop of candidates for international humanitarian prizes should be seen as another sign of US exceptionalism!  jz

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, considered Europe's top human rights award, has been bestowed on luminaries like Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Nelson Mandela. This year, in a slap against Washington, the award could go to Edward J. Snowden, known as either the NSA whistle-blower or a traitor, depending on one's perspective. The nomination is the latest in a series of rebukes from European lawmakers upset with the Obama administration's foreign policies, including its surveillance program.

13-09-30 Endless banking schemes

Whether it is banking, Enron, or other large corporations, the scheme goes along the same lines:  Through corrupt lobbying, some obscure provisions are placed in legistlation, which permit lawful looting of the American people and undermining the US economy.  Here the issue is risky, explosive, mega-volume derivatives and "safe harbor" provisions on default. jz
Increased regulation and low interest rates are driving lending from the regulated commercial banking system into the unregulated shadow banking system. The shadow banks are propped up by a hidden government guarantee in the form of safe harbor status under the 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Act. The result is to create perverse incentives for the financial system to self-destruct.
